Moving to Germany for work at 45, 50 or 55 is possible. There is no general upper age limit for skilled workers under sections 18a and 18b of the Residence Act. However, when a permit under those provisions is first issued after you have reached 45, an additional condition applies. In 2026, you need at least EUR 55,770 gross annual salary or evidence of adequate pension provision. The law also permits individual exceptions. The basis is section 18(2), no. 5 AufenthG.
Before applying, you also need to solve a practical problem: finding an employer whose needs match your qualifications, experience and language skills. German substantially broadens your options. English-speaking positions exist, particularly in IT and international teams, but building an entire relocation plan around an assumed absence of language requirements is risky.
Information current as of 20 October 2026. This article concerns a first work-related move from outside the EU, including CIS countries. If you already hold a status in Germany, your existing residence basis needs separate assessment.
Who does the age-45 rule cover?
The article focuses on two principal skilled worker permits:
- Section 18a AufenthG: skilled workers with vocational training that meets German requirements;
- Section 18b AufenthG: skilled workers with a German degree, a recognised foreign degree or a foreign degree comparable to a German university qualification.
The age condition concerns the first grant under these provisions after reaching 45. It does not mean “only from your 46th birthday”. If you have turned 45, check the financial requirement in advance.
“Work visa” covers several legal routes. The EU Blue Card falls under section 18g, while some routes for professionally experienced workers use other provisions. Do not transfer requirements between them without checking. Our guide to moving to Germany through employment outlines the options.
Age does not remove the ordinary conditions: a specific offer of qualified employment, an appropriate qualification, any required professional licence and the general entry requirements. Extensive experience does not replace qualification recognition where the chosen route requires it.
How much salary is required from age 45 in 2026?
For the first section 18a or 18b permit in the circumstances discussed here, the salary threshold is:
- EUR 55,770 gross per year;
- EUR 4,647.50 gross per month if annual pay is divided into twelve equal payments.
The figure is confirmed on the official Make it in Germany portal. The law ties it to 55% of the annual contribution assessment ceiling for the general pension insurance scheme. It therefore changes by year: do not automatically use the 2026 amount for a move in 2027.
Gross means before tax and social contributions. Expected take-home pay is not the correct comparison. A spouse's earnings, savings and possible side jobs are not automatically added to the salary in the main employment contract to meet the threshold.
Before signing, examine basic salary, guaranteed payments, variable bonuses and probation terms. If a bonus is needed to reach the minimum, establish in advance whether that particular payment will count. An employer's promise to increase your pay later does not establish that the initial offer meets the requirement.
Two illustrative calculations
A fixed EUR 4,800 gross per month paid twelve times gives EUR 57,600 annually. That exceeds the 2026 threshold, but your qualification, the type of job and the other requirements still need checking.
EUR 4,300 gross per month gives EUR 51,600 annually. That is insufficient for the salary branch of the age-45 rule. The next questions are adequate pension provision, a statutory exception or another suitable route such as the EU Blue Card. Depositing the difference in an ordinary bank account does not satisfy the salary requirement.
Also calculate your living budget after tax: rent, insurance, transport, family expenses and a reserve until the first payment. Meeting a visa threshold does not tell you whether the particular move will be financially comfortable.
What counts as adequate pension provision?
If salary is below EUR 55,770, the law permits evidence of angemessene Altersversorgung, or adequate provision for old age. This is an alternative way of meeting the age-related condition. The rule does not require both the salary threshold and the purchase of additional pension insurance.
Section 18(2), no. 5 does not specify one universal savings amount or a single evidence checklist for every applicant. For example, the official Berlin service page allows a lower salary where other state or private sources provide adequate retirement provision. Berlin's page does not replace the requirements of the mission where you apply.
For an initial assessment, collect information about what you already have:
- accrued pension rights and statements of expected benefits;
- existing private pension contracts, payment dates and conditions;
- savings and other assets you wish to submit for consideration;
- evidence of ownership, value and liabilities attached to property or other assets.
This is a preparation list, not a promise that an authority will accept any asset. Owning an apartment or holding a particular bank balance does not by itself establish adequacy. Find out which evidence is suitable in your case and how it should be presented.
For foreign pension rights, clarify the amount, commencement date and payment conditions, including whether benefits can be received after moving. A statement that only lists years of service may need supplementing before future income can be assessed. Translation, valuation and document currency requirements need separate clarification.
Do not buy a financial product simply because it is marketed as “pension insurance for a visa”. First establish which requirement it is supposed to prove and whether the competent authority accepts that form of provision. A seller's promise does not determine a visa decision.
When can an exception apply?
Section 18(2), no. 5 permits an exception where there is a public interest in the employment, particularly a regional, economic or labour-market interest. It specifically mentions cases in which salary falls only slightly below the threshold or age is only slightly above the limit.
This is a possibility for an individual decision. The provision does not create an automatic 10% salary discount or a uniform additional age band. An employer having searched for a long time does not guarantee an exception.
If you are considering this option, prepare the reasoning with the employer: why the role matters, what you will do and what the relevant interest is. The competent authority decides. A company or intermediary cannot guarantee the outcome in advance.
EU Blue Card after 45: why it needs a separate assessment
The age condition in section 18(2), no. 5 is worded for the first permit under sections 18a or 18b. It does not automatically carry over to the EU Blue Card under section 18g. Check the Blue Card before concluding that an offered salary is too low.
Its 2026 gross annual thresholds are:
- EUR 50,700 under the general rule;
- EUR 45,934.20 for the categories defined by law, including relevant shortage occupations, with the required Federal Employment Agency approval.
The lower threshold also applies to eligible recent graduates and the special IT route without a formal degree. Each category has its own conditions. Current figures appear on the Make it in Germany EU Blue Card page.
Salary alone is insufficient. Normally, you need an appropriate university degree or an eligible comparable tertiary qualification, work appropriate to your qualification and an employment offer lasting at least six months. A regulated profession requires a professional licensing check. The special IT route has separate experience requirements. See section 18g AufenthG.
For example, a 49-year-old offered EUR 52,000 annually is below the age-45 salary threshold for section 18b but above the general Blue Card threshold. If the other section 18g conditions are met, it may be suitable. If not, an ordinary employment contract cannot simply be relabelled a Blue Card offer.

German: a key practical issue before finding an employer
The Residence Act sets no single general language level for sections 18a, 18b or the EU Blue Card. This is reflected in the official Make it in Germany language requirements chart. Qualification recognition, professional licensing and individual case circumstances may involve additional requirements.
Hiring depends on the duties. Employers need to know whether you can complete an interview, understand instructions, communicate with colleagues and clients, and maintain documentation. The Federal Employment Agency notes that good German improves job prospects, many employers expect at least basic knowledge and English alone is usually insufficient.
Assess language particularly carefully for work involving patients, children, local customers, production instructions or management of a German-speaking team. For regulated professions, separately check general and professional German, the examination required and the rules of the relevant federal state.
Can you find work with English alone?
Yes, such vacancies exist. IT and certain international businesses or teams are sensible places to look. However, English-speaking work is not confined to IT, and an IT role does not waive the requirements of its particular vacancy. Different departments within the same company may work in different languages.
Without German, your range of employers is usually narrower. Base an English-only search on real suitable vacancies rather than assumptions. Assess your English by your ability to work and interview in it too.
Prepare your language skills alongside the search
Select several relevant vacancies and record recurring language requirements. Practise presenting your experience, explaining a professional task and answering follow-up questions. B1–B2 can be a preparation target for German-speaking positions, but an employer or professional licensing body may require a different level.
Do not focus only on a certificate. An experienced applicant needs to demonstrate that experience in the interview language. Prepare examples from recent projects, responsibilities, results and tools used. Build language preparation into the plan before sending large numbers of applications.
Finding an employer for relocation at 45 and over
Start with a specific professional objective: what work can you perform in Germany now, and what documents demonstrate that? “I am ready to do anything” makes assessment harder and does not address the qualified-employment requirement under sections 18a and 18b.
Build a vacancy list with five fields: duties, education, language, region and salary. Separately note willingness to consider an applicant abroad and help prepare documents. Clarify the age-related salary issue before investing in a long sequence of interviews.
Emphasise current experience in your CV: recent projects, equipment, software, management tasks and measurable results you can genuinely substantiate. Show what twenty years of experience means in skills the employer needs today. Do not invent achievements or exaggerate your language level.
Use company careers pages, specialist platforms and official job services. Our article on work in Germany for Russian-speaking professionals covers vacancies and CV preparation. After an interview, obtain written clarification of duties, pay, start dates and any conditions still to be met.
If you do not yet have an employer, ask about help with the job search and candidate preparation. FIRMDER/RelocationDE supports profile assessment, CV preparation, suitable vacancy searches and communication with employers. The scope is agreed individually. Hiring remains the company's decision, while visas are decided by the competent authorities.
Qualifications and the contract: what else to check
For section 18a, a foreign vocational qualification normally needs recognition in Germany. For section 18b, the institution and degree are checked, or the necessary assessment is obtained. An H+ entry in anabin concerns the institution; it does not replace examination of the specific degree. If the database is insufficient, a ZAB Statement of Comparability, Zeugnisbewertung, may be needed. See the official academic qualification assessment guidance.
Under sections 18a and 18b, the job must be qualified employment but need not exactly match the subject of your degree or training. A regulated profession still requires the relevant licence or legally accepted assurance that it will be granted. Auxiliary work does not become qualified employment merely because its applicant holds a degree.
Compare the job title, duties, hours, location, duration, start date and gross pay across the contract and employer documents. Federal Employment Agency approval is normally required; it examines whether conditions are comparable with those of domestic employees. An employer's willingness to hire and permission under the visa procedure remain separate stages.
Checklist before applying for the work visa
Obtain the exact document list from the German mission responsible for your place of residence. For preparation, check:
- Legal route: why does section 18a, 18b or 18g fit, and are its conditions met?
- Age and finances: does the age-45 rule apply, is salary sufficient, or how will pension provision be evidenced?
- Qualification: do you have diplomas, supplements, recognition, anabin records or a ZAB assessment?
- Profession and language: are a licence, examinations or specific language skills required?
- Employer: do the contract and Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis match, and who supplies further documents?
- Personal documents: are your passport, application, photographs, CV, necessary translations and insurance ready?
- Application country: is the chosen mission responsible, and is the current appointment or online process clear?
- Timing and budget: has the start date been agreed, and have you allowed for costs before the first salary and a possible delay?
If pay is close to the threshold and the process runs into the following calendar year, recheck the applicable figures. Do not incur non-refundable costs based on a promise of a guaranteed visa within a particular number of weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. There is no general upper age limit under sections 18a and 18b. For a first permit from age 45, check the special financial condition, qualifications, employment and all other requirements.
No. It is the gross annual salary for the salary branch of the rule in 2026. Savings may be considered when assessing retirement provision, but they do not become contractual salary.
Yes, where adequate pension provision is demonstrated or a statutory exception is applied. Employment conditions and other requirements are checked independently of that alternative.
No. Meeting the salary condition does not require an additional pension provision demonstration under this rule. Below the threshold, review existing rights and evidence first rather than buying a generic “visa insurance” product.
Possibly. It has its own thresholds and requirements. Check qualifications, the job's suitability, offer duration and the applicable salary category. The section 18a/18b age rule does not automatically apply to it.
There is no single general language level for sections 18a, 18b and the Blue Card. German nevertheless matters in finding an employer and is required for access to some professions. Check the specific job and route.
No. These routes require qualified employment. A degree and an employer's agreement do not remove that requirement. Other possible routes need separate assessment.
How to start preparing
For an initial assessment, prepare your CV, education details, language level and target role. If you already have an offer, add the contract showing gross salary. If pay is below the relevant threshold, establish whether pension rights and other evidence of retirement provision need review.
The conditions depend on documents, profession, legal basis and application country. This article provides general orientation rather than an individual legal assessment. Germany's competent authorities decide visa and residence applications.
