Changing employers and losing your job with an EU Blue Card in Germany
A German EU Blue Card allows you to change employers without separate permission from the immigration authority. During the first 12 months of employment, you must notify the authority of the change: it may suspend the move for up to 30 days and reject it if the new job does not meet Blue Card requirements. Your card does not automatically become invalid when your employment ends, but your continued status and job search periods need to be checked separately. §18g(4) AufenthG, BMI guidance, paragraph 18g.V.3.
This article covers changes between employers within Germany. Separate rules apply when moving to another EU country for work. The basic qualification requirements are explained in our guide to the EU Blue Card for IT professionals.

Changing employers with an EU Blue Card
Changing jobs within the first 12 months
The period is linked to the start of employment under the Blue Card. A probationary period in your employment contract does not change this rule. For example, completing a six-month probation does not in itself end the duty to notify the authority during the first year.
You must report each new employer and changes affecting Blue Card conditions, such as a significant salary reduction or changes to the duties or skill level of the job. This is provided for in §82(1) AufenthG.
In practice, it is safer to send the information in advance once the new employer, terms and start date are known. Attach the contract and job description, and keep proof of submission. Check your immigration authority’s website for the submission channel: online forms and processing procedures may differ.
The law does not impose a mandatory 30-day wait after every notification. It gives the authority power to suspend the change and check the conditions; this is not an automatic pause for everyone. If the authority has issued a suspension decision, the start of your new job must be arranged in accordance with it. The review may involve the Federal Employment Agency where its approval is required. §18g(4) AufenthG, BMWE, questions 6–7.
After the first 12 months
The specific duty to report each change under section 82(1) and the power to suspend a change under section 18g(4) apply during the first 12 months. However, to retain your Blue Card, your new employment must still meet its requirements. Moving to a substantially different occupation or a salary below the applicable threshold requires a separate assessment.
Also check the supplementary sheet attached to your card. If it still names your previous employer, clarify whether the entry needs updating or HR needs a confirmation. Berlin’s LEA, for example, states that after one year of qualifying employment, the Blue Card does not need to be amended for a job change; a certificate is available on request. This is a specific Berlin procedure and should not automatically be assumed to apply at another authority. Service Berlin.
What to check in your new contract
To continue working specifically under a Blue Card, check the offer against the following conditions:
- Duration of employment: at least six months.
- Salary in 2026: the general threshold is EUR 50,700 gross per year, or EUR 4,225 per month.
- Lower threshold: EUR 45,934.20 gross per year, or EUR 3,827.85 per month, for the categories specified by law. These include qualifying shortage occupations, certain recent graduates and the special experience-based IT route.
- A job appropriate to your qualifications: the actual duties are assessed, not just the job title.
- Professional licensing: regulated professions require the relevant authorisation.
- Federal Employment Agency approval: required in the cases specified by law, including Blue Cards under the lower salary threshold and the special IT route without a degree. Make it in Germany.
The IT route without a degree requires at least three years of relevant experience within the past seven years and the required level of skills. The new position must also qualify under this route. If you no longer meet the Blue Card requirements, check whether another employment residence permit is available for your qualifications and experience before changing jobs. A new contract alone does not switch you to another residence permit. Federal Employment Agency, Make it in Germany.
Termination and finding a new job
If you are dismissed or resign
If employment ends early, the cardholder must notify the immigration authority within two weeks of becoming aware of it. Do not delay notification until you have found a new job. State both the date you received notice and the date your employment ends: these are different dates. The legal basis is §82(6) AufenthG.
Your employer has a separate duty to report early termination within four weeks of becoming aware of it. Their notification does not replace yours. §4a(5) AufenthG.
The rule matters both when you resign and when you sign a termination agreement (Aufhebungsvertrag). A fixed-term contract ending on its originally agreed date is not the same as early termination. Nevertheless, it is sensible to notify the authority in advance that the contract will not be renewed and clarify your future status.
Do not ignore correspondence from the authority: §52(2b) AufenthG provides for the possible revocation of a Blue Card, including where its conditions cease to be met or mandatory notification duties are breached. Termination of employment alone is not such a decision.
How long do you have to find a new job in 2026?
The changes effective from 29 July 2026 are particularly relevant here. The new §18(5) AufenthG governs the shortening of an employment residence permit after early termination that has been reported to the immigration authority. When shortening validity under section 7(2), the authority must leave at least six months of validity from the end of employment. In the particularly exploitative working conditions specified by law, the period is at least nine months.
The law expressly prohibits extending this period beyond the residence permit’s original expiry date. If your card expires earlier, six months are not automatically added. The amendment and its commencement date are set out in Articles 13 and 18 of the Act of 22 July 2026.
The requirements for securing your livelihood continue to apply, as expressly stated in the explanatory memorandum to the amendment, Bundestag document 21/7004, p. 38. Alongside the deadlines, therefore, check your budget and continued health insurance coverage.
EU law separately protects against revocation or refusal to renew a Blue Card because of unemployment: Article 8(5) of Directive 2021/1883 refers to cumulative periods of up to three months for holders of less than two years and up to six months for holders of at least two years. The formula ‘everyone gets three months after dismissal’ therefore does not describe the current German position. Nor should each termination be assumed to automatically start a fresh full period. EU Directive, Article 8(5).
Shortening the card’s validity and revoking it are different legal measures. Request written clarification for your case: until what date does your status remain valid, what decision has been made, and do you need to apply for another residence permit? These rules do not give an unconditional right to remain unemployed until the date printed on your card or to take any side job.
If your card is about to expire, apply for an extension or another suitable residence permit before it expires. Where the conditions of section 81(4) are met, your existing status continues until a decision is made; a Fiktionsbescheinigung documents this. An ordinary notification of job loss should not be treated as such an application. §81 AufenthG.
Documents to prepare and first steps
Put together one clear set of documents:
- Passport, EU Blue Card and supplementary sheet (Zusatzblatt).
- Dismissal notice or termination agreement stating the employment end date.
- Your new contract or a specific offer, if you have already found a job.
- The new employer’s Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis form and a description of your duties.
- Evidence of qualifications, experience and professional licensing, where needed to assess the new position.
- A brief timeline of your Blue Card employment and previous gaps, together with proof of notifications sent.
The exact list depends on your circumstances. For example, the official Berlin procedure for changing employers lists the contract, employer form and passport details; the authority may request additional documents. Service Berlin.
Also check the registration deadlines with the Federal Employment Agency. You normally need to register as a jobseeker at least three months before your employment ends, or within three days if you learn of the end date later. Separate registration as unemployed is required by the first day of unemployment at the latest to avoid losses in any benefits you may be entitled to. These registrations do not replace notification to the immigration authority. Arbeitsuchendmeldung, Arbeitslosmeldung.
FAQ
No. Section 18g(4) removes the requirement for separate permission to change jobs. During the first year, the notification requirement and the authority’s power to suspend the change remain. You must comply with any specific restrictive decision that has been issued.
No. The law links this period to the start of employment under the Blue Card. A new probationary period at your next company does not restart it.
No. Employees have their own duty and their own two-week deadline under section 82(6). Keep proof of your personal notification.
If your previous employment ends early, you cannot wait for a new contract: notification is required within the statutory deadline. A new offer can be submitted separately later.
Your card is not automatically extended. Section 18(5) limits a subsequent shortening of validity in the specified circumstances; it does not extend the original expiry date. If your card is due to expire soon, you need to act in advance.
If your new salary still meets the applicable threshold and the other conditions are satisfied, a pay cut alone does not rule out a Blue Card. If the threshold is not met, you need to check another basis for employment.
Preparing for the next step
To discuss your situation, prepare your employment dates, your card’s expiry date and the terms of the new offer. At a RelocationDE consultation you can discuss the documents and the order of the next steps. The competent authority decides on your status; a dispute about dismissal or revocation of a residence permit requires individual legal assessment.
